Are there any vaccines available for Genital Warts?

Yes. Pharmaceuticals company Merck has a vaccine caaled Gardasil that can be used to protect against HPV or human papilloma virus, which causes genital warts. It has been tested an approved for females and the tests are on for males. However, it is a preventive VACCINE, not a remedy treatment - meaning, it should be taken before one gets involved with sexual activities. It may not be effective if the person is already infected with HPV Genital Warts problems. In that case, he/she must go for medical treatment of Genital Warts, as described below.


What is Genital Warts Treatment or What is the treatment for Genital Warts?
Please note that Treatment is available for visible Genital Warts, not for HPV. Here we describe some of the common treatments used for treating genital warts, but please note that warts can re-occur anytime even after the treatment. Hence, one may have to go for the Wart Removal treatment again:

- Wait and Watch Treatment for Genital Warts: Genital warts are observed to disappear on their own after sometimes, without any treatment. However, this is completely random and differs from person to person and other unknown factors. So one may not just rely on this method for Genital wart removal. Even if they are found to disappear on their own, they may reoccur anytime.
* Sinecatechins (marked as Veregen and Polyphenon E): A kind of ointment of catechins made from green tea and similar things.

Doctor-applied Treatment for Genital Warts:

* Liquid nitrogen cryosurgery for Treatment for Genital Warts:
It is known to be effective by eliminting warts upto 80%.
Recurrence rate is high - 40% to 75% within 6 months after treatment
Side effects: Local infections are observed with this. But it is considered safe during pregnancy.

* Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) for Treatment for Genital Warts:
Not known to be as effective as cryosurgery,
Not recommended for use in the vagina, cervix, or urinary meatus.

* Surgical excision for Treatment for Genital Warts:
Best treatment considered for large warts
But it is known to have greater scarring

* Laser ablation for Treatment for Genital Warts:
Very expensive method
Not very common, and used as a last treatment method

* Use of Chemicals for Treatment for Genital Warts: Like 20% podophyllin anti-mitotic solution can be applied to the affected area and later washed off.
Not recommended for use on vagina, urethra, perianal area, or cervix
Must be applied by a physician
Side effects & Reactions observed are nausea, vomiting, fever, confusion, coma, renal failure, ileus, and leukopenia;
Even death has been reported with extensive topical application, or application on mucous membrances.

* Interferon for Treatment for Genital Warts:
Learnt to be effective,
However it is expensive
No sure shot consistency in the results

However, one must note that warts can re-occur anytime even after the treatment. Hence, one may have to go for the Wart Removal treatment again
